Major Series Lacrosse mourns the loss of Oakville Rock General Manager Terry Sanderson

Statement from MSL Commissioner Jim Brady on the untimely passing of Oakville Rock General Manager Terry Sanderson Thursday afternoon.

"Terry has been a wonderful leader in lacrosse all his years. The Major Series Lacrosse league will miss him so much. He was as frank a person as you could ever meet and he drove himself to be the very best. If you were associated with him in any way you just respected his efforts. His passing hurts all lacrosse people. My deep sympathy to his family and Josh who I know loved his dad as they all did. I am sad!"

Chiefs take Game 6 9-4 to capture Mann Cup for second straight year

The Six Nations Chiefs are Mann Cup champions again. They beat the Victoria Shamrocks 9-4 Friday night to win the best of seven series 4-2 and bring the Mann Cup back to the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena. Brandon Miller was excellent for the Chiefs again, earning first star honours for the game and Mike Kelly Trophy as MVP for the series. Miller stopped 34 of the 38 shots he faced.

Colin Boucher picked off a pass and raced down the floor to score an unassisted transition goal that broke a 1-1 tie at 14:19 of the first period and set the Chiefs on the path to victory. Kasey Beirnes followed with a goal—one of his two to go along with two assists in the game—37 seconds later and the Chiefs led 3-1 after one period.

The Shamrocks put up a spirited battle, coming close to scoring on a number of occasions but just not being able to get the ball past Miller with any regularity. At eight minutes of the second period, Colin Doyle took a cross-floor pass from Beirnes and quickly redirected a bounce shot past Cody Hagedorn to make it 4-1.

Jamieson's third-period power play goals spark Chiefs to 8-6 win in Game 5 of Mann Cup for 3-2 lead in series

The Six Nations Chiefs took a 3-2 lead in the 2014 Mann Cup with an 8-6 win over the Victoria Shamrocks Wednesday night. Cody Jamieson scored back to back power play goals on a five-minute high-sticking major by Bubba Westwood to break a 5-5 tie in the third period. The Shamrocks had fought back from a 5-2 deficit with a Tyler Hass transition goal late in the second then a pair of outside shot goals from Corey Small to open the third.

With Matt Flindell out for the series with a head injury, Cody Hagedorn was forced into net for the Shamrocks and did an excellent job for them, making 37 saves. He couldn't stop Jamieson's pair of rockets from the high slot, though, and that proved to be the difference in the game. Jamieson had taken his own major penalty when he slashed Hass towards the end of the second period. The Chiefs were able to kill off that penalty, in part because they drew a pair of slashing penalties by Ben McCullough while ragging the ball.

Chiefs tie up Mann Cup at two games apiece with 12-6 win over Shamrocks

The Six Nations Chiefs rode a 7-3 second period to a 12-6 romp over the Victoria Shamrocks in Game 4 of the 2014 Mann Cup Tuesday night, tying the best of seven series 2-2. The Chiefs, who had lost back to back games in overtime, came out flying and didn't give Victoria a chance to mount another comeback, as they had in Game 3 when they fought back from a trio of four-goal deficits.

Six Nations led 3-0 after the first period, then stretched their lead by scoring the first two goals of the second. After Victoria responded with a pair to give their fans hope, the Chiefs snuffed it out by outscoring the Shamrocks 5-1 the rest of the way in the period. Six Nations' defence was at its smash-mouth best and Brandon Miller was once again excellent in the Chiefs net.

Cody Jamieson led the way for the Chiefs with 4 goals and an assist, Stephen Keogh had 2 goals and 2 helpers and Kasey Beirnes and Jeff Shattler each added a goal and 3 assist. Rhys Duch led the Shamrocks with 2 goals and 1 assist.

Shamrocks win second straight overtime game, 12-11, to take 2-1 lead in Mann Cup

The Victoria Shamrocks won in overtime for the second straight game to take a 2-1 lead in the Mann Cup. Victoria came back from 6-2 and 8-4 deficits to beat the Six Nations Chiefs 12-11 when Scott Ranger scored the only goal of overtime Monday night.

The Chiefs looked like they had taken control of the game when they put up a five-goal run in a 5:06 stretch of the second period to go up 6-2. Tyler Hass broke out of Victoria's defensive zone and raced down the floor for a goal to get the Shamrocks started on their comeback. The team's combined for 12 goals in the second period, more than they had scored combined in either of the first two games.

The Shamrocks kept chipping away at the Six Nations lead and tied things up at 4:52 of the third when Dhane Smith replicated Hass' marker by picking off a pass at the top of the D zone and running away from a pair of Chiefs' players to get an open look and bury the ball to make it 8-8. Cody Jamieson and Colin Doyle scored to create another two-goal lead for Six Nations, but Smith and Corey Small—with one of three power play markers the Shamrocks would get in the game—tied it up again.

Shamrocks take 6-5 win in double overtime to tie Mann Cup 1-1

The Victoria Shamrocks won a roller coaster of a game 6-5 in sudden-death overtime to tie the 2014 Mann Cup at one game apiece. Victoria beat the Six Nations Chiefs when Chris Wardle slipped behind the defence and buried a pass from Scott Ranger on the crease 2:32 into the fifth period.

It was Wardle's second goal of the game to go along with 2 assists. Corey Small also scored twice for the Shamrocks. Colin Doyle and Craig Point each had a pair of goals for the Chiefs. Doyle's second looked like it might stand as the game-winner. He took a pass from Jesse Gamble in transition and barrelled down the slot to put the ball past Matt Flindell at 3:36 of the first overtime, giving the Chiefs a 5-4 lead. Small evened things up with 31 seconds left in the frame when he bounced a shot through Brandon Miller.

Both goalies and defences were outstanding throughout the game. It was 3-1 Six Nations after the first period and Wardle scored the only goal of the second on a power play. Rhys Duch tied it up at 3:33 of the third. Small, who had been struggling with is shot through the first two games, finally connected to give the Shamrocks their first lead of the series at 14:28.

The Six Nations Chiefs got off to a good start on the defence of their Mann Cup title, beating the Victoria Shamrocks 7-4 in Game 1 Friday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena. Brandon Miller was named player of the game for the Chiefs after making 43 saves. Cody Jamieson led the Chiefs with 2 goals and 3 assists. Craig Point and Colin Doyle also had 2 goals each for Six Nations. Dhane Smith had a goal and an assist to lead the Shamrocks and was named their player of the game.

The Shamrocks came out pressuring the Chiefs early and created some good chances but dropped a number of passes when they had found their way inside the Six Nations defence. The Chiefs responded with a string of goals on outside shots to take a 4-1 lead after the first period.

The Chiefs scored twice more to in the second to take a 6-1 lead. The Shamrocks got a power play from Chris Wardle during a five-minute man advantage in the second, but Doyle responded with a shorthanded marker to maintain the Chiefs' lead. Victoria scored the only 2 goals of the third period but the Chiefs held on for the win.

The Six Nations Chiefs scored the last seven goals, including the only six of the third period, to beat the Peterborough Lakers 9-5 and win Game 7 of the MSL finals, earning them a trip to their second straight Mann Cup.

Cody Jamieson led the Chiefs with 3 goals and 3 assists and was named the Johnny Shooter Davis Trophy winner as the most valuable player of the MSL playoffs. Jeff Shattler added 2 goals and 2 assists. Brad Self and Mark Steenhuis each scored twice for Peterborough.

Peterborough took a 4-1 lead and was ahead 5-2 after John Grant Jr. scored 3:17 into the second period. After that it was all Six Nations. Brandon Miller relieved Evan Kirk in the Chiefs net after the fourth Peterborough goal and stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced.

A 3-goal span in just 1:08 of the third period took the Chiefs from a 5-4 deficit to a 7-5 lead and into control of the game. From there they played solid defence and added a couple of insurance markers to ensure that they have a chance to defend the Mann Cup title they won last year in Victoria. The Mann Cup starts this Friday at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Six Nations in a rematch with the Victoria Shamrocks.

Lakers win 10-9 overtime thriller over Chiefs to force Game 7

(Photo: Darryl Smart)
Missing their starting goalie and the league MVP, the Peterborough Lakers prevailed 10-9 over the Six Nations Chiefs Friday night in a thrilling overtime win that forces a seventh and deciding game in the MSL finals. Tyler Carlson stepped in for Matt Vinc, who was away at a wedding, and played well in goal for the Lakers. Carlson got a little help from Andrew Suitor, who dove to stop the ball on the goal line as it was trickling in with seconds left in the overtime period.

That play saved the Lakers from giving up another late tying goal after Jeff Shattler had forced overtime with a shot through a screen with just eight seconds to play in the third period. John Grant Jr. scored both Lakers overtime markers on lasers from the outside. The first gave them a 9-8 lead and the second came 1:14 after Roger Vyse had tied it up for the Chiefs. Both Vyse's goal and Grant's winner came on the power play.

“When you've got a defence like this it's pretty easy to come and just do what you've got to do,” Carlson said. “Vinc is a great goalie and it's awesome sitting behind him. He's going to come out next game and we're going to kick ass again. We're going to win again and we're going to take it to the Mann Cup.”

Lakers win Game 5 to stay alive in MSL finals

Cory Vitarelli's hat trick helped the Lakers take Game 5 and force Game 6 in Six Nations. (Photo: Tim Prothero)
The Peterborough Lakers won Game 5 of the MSL finals 9-6 in Peterborough to force a sixth game. The Six Nations Chiefs now lead the best of seven series 3-2 with Game 6 back in Six Nations Friday night. Shawn Evans led the way for the Lakers with 4 goals and 3 assists, including a pair of shorthanded goals that helped Peterborough take a 6-1 lead in the second period.

The Chiefs got a pair of goals each from Cody Jamieson and Stephen Keogh to battle back within two goals with a minute and a half to play. Evans finished things off with an empty net marker with 10 seconds left.

Evans said he and his teammates had plenty of incentive to win the game. "We needed to play. If we lose, we're done and it's golf season. We don't want that. We want to keep playing lacrosse," Evans said. "I don't like to lose and I don't like to give up just like that and give them a 4-1 series win. We needed to step it up and play to win and we played to win all 60 minutes of that game. The outcome showed it."

Chiefs beat Lakers 9-7 to take 3-1 lead in MSL finals

on the verge of returning to defend their Mann Cup title. (Photo: Tim Prothero)
The Six Nations Chiefs have put themselves on the verge of heading back to the Mann Cup to defend their title, downing the Peterborough Lakers 9-7 in Game 4 of the MSL finals to take a 3-1 series lead Monday night. Six Nations started strong, taking a 5-1 lead after the first period and extending that to 6-1 when Roger Vyse scored 7:25 into the second. The Lakers fought back to make it a close game thanks largely to the sharpshooting of John Grant Jr., who had 4 goals and added an assist.

The Lakers were denied a potential momentum-shifter at the end of the second period. Six Nations pulled goalie Evan Kirk for an extra attacker with over 30 seconds to play. When a rebound ricocheted up the floor, Brad Self ran it down and fired the ball into the empty net what looked and sounded like just before the final buzzer. The goal was waived off and rather than going into the locker room on a high, the Lakers trailed 7-3.

They still came out with a flurry in the third, though. They scored three times in the first three minutes to pull within a single goal. Despite plenty of pressure, though, they couldn't get the tying marker. Eventually the Chiefs responded, with Craig Point and Kasey Beirnes firing home goals that put the game away for Six Nations.

Cody Jamieson led the way for Six Nations with 2 goals and 3 assists, Colin Doyle had 4 helpers and Jeff Shattler had a goal and 3 assists. Shawn Evans added 4 assists for the Lakers.

“The boys on the bench just said let's take a deep breath, get back to what we were doing, get back to packing it in and they're going to work for anything they get,” Chiefs coach Rich Kilgour said of his team's response to the Lakers run in the third period. “That's what our defence has done all year and that's what they did tonight.”

The one thing he'd like to change for Game 5, tonight at Peterborough's Memorial Centre, is better discipline. “We had them 6-1 and had an undisciplined four-minute penalty. We had them 7-3 to start the third and we took a penalty there,” Kilgour said. “We talked about, why give them a chance. We gave them a chance, the refs called it and we let them right back in it, they got rolling a bit. If we get them down a bit we have to be more disciplined and then keep the run going. That's the only thing I want to work on.”

Chiefs stage huge comeback to down Lakers 8-5, even MSL finals 1-1

Vaughn Harris has 5 goals in two games for the Six Nations Chiefs. (Photo: Darryl Smart)
For 53 minutes Tuesday night, the Six Nations Chiefs had trouble scoring and they trailed the Peterborough Lakers 5-3. Then they started to find the back of the net, scoring 5 goals in three and a half minutes to take an 8-5 win and even the Major Series Lacrosse finals at one game each.

Kasey Beirnes started the decisive run when he converted a Colin Doyle pass on top of the crease at 13:24. Just 25 seconds later, Cody Jamieson shovelled a one-handed pass to Roger Vyse who banged it home from almost the same spot where Beirnes had scored. Jesse Gamble then fired back to back goals on outside shots in transition that snuck past Matt Vinc on the near post. Jamieson finished the run ripping one home 16 seconds after Gamble's second goal.

"We said stick to the game plan," said Chiefs Head Coach Rich Kilgour. "I know the guys were getting frustrated but it paid off. Working, working, working then when they started dropping they started dropping. It was a great game. As great as it was, it's still 1-1."

Lakers take opening game of MSL finals 9-7 behind Grant's 7-point night

John Grant Jr. had 7 points to lead the Lakers to a 9-7 Game 1 win in the MSL finals. (Photo: Tim Prothero)
The Peterborough Lakers drew first blood in the Major Series Lacrosse finals, downing the Six Nations Chiefs in a fast-paced and well-played opening game at the Peterborough Memorial Centre Thursday night. The game went back and forth throughout, with neither team taking more than a one-goal lead. John Grant Jr. led the way for Peterborough with 3 goals and 4 assists. Shawn Evans added a goal and 4 assists and Chad Culp a pair of goals, including the game-winner, and an assist. Vaughn Harris posted a hat trick for the Chiefs and Cody Jamieson added 2 goals and 2 assists. Matt Vinc made 49 saves to earn the win as the Chiefs outshot the Lakers 56-40.

Evans started the scoring 2:06 into the game. Colin Boucher tied it up on a breakout with Jesse Gamble at 10:20 and Harris gave the Chiefs what would be their only lead of the game 14 seconds later. Grant scored all three of his goals in the rest of the first period as the Lakers headed to the break up 4-3.

All the scoring in the second period took place in its first four minutes. Harris tied it up 30 seconds in. Stephen Hoar's holding call 1:53 in was the first penalty of the game and both teams scored on it. Brad Self took a pass from Andrew Suitor for a shorthanded marker then Jamieson notched a power play goal. Matt Crough restored the Lakers' lead just 20 second later when he took a perfect pass from Grant in traffic on top of the crease and tucked it past Evan Kirk

Gamble tied things up again, at 6-6, when he broke away to score unassisted 1:23 into the third period. Culp and Harris traded goals to make it 7-7 before the Chiefs took a too many men penalty to give the Lakers their only power play of the game. Peterborough took advantage of it. Culp took a pass from Grant near the goal line, fired a cross-crease pass to Evans then bounced home the return pass on a quick stick for what would prove to be the winner.

Mark Steenhuis added an insurance with a little under five minutes to play. The Lakers combined strong defence, great goaltending from Vinc and the help of a few posts to hold on for the 9-7 win.

Lakers and Chiefs earn berths in MSL finals to start Thursday

The Peterborough Lakers and Six Nations Chiefs will meet for the MSL title after wrapping up their semifinal series Monday night. (Photo: Tim Prothero)
The MSL finals matchup is set. The Peterborough Lakers and Six Nations Chiefs finished off their semifinal series in five games each Monday night. Peterborough dominated the KW Kodiaks to take a 12-2 lead then cruised to a 13-9 win behind a spectacular performance from John Grant Jr. The Lakers star scored 7 goals, most of them in breathtaking fashion, and added 3 assists. Mark Steenhuis' big night was overshadowed by Grant's brilliance; Steenhuis scored 3 goals and 5 assists. Peterborough took a 3-2 lead after the first period then ran up a 6-0 second to take total control of the game. They added three more to open the third before taking their foot off the pedal and giving up 7 of the game's final 8 goals. Mitch Wilde led KW with a hat trick and 2 assists. Corey Fowler and Ryan Benesch each scored twice and added 3 assists.

In Whitby, Six Nations got the last two goals of the game from Cody Jamieson to pull out a game that went back and forth in a series of runs. Jamieson, who had 4 goals and 3 assists total, potted the winner with just 22 seconds left in the game. Jeff Shattler added 2 goals and 4 assists. Curtis Knight led the Redmen with 3 goals and 4 assists; Shawn Williams added 2 goals and 5 assists.

The MSL finals will start Thursday night in Peterborough at 8pm. The rest of the schedule has not yet been finalized.

Redmen stay alive with 9-7 win over Chiefs, force Game 5 Monday

Mike Teeter and the Brooklin Redmen won Game 4 9-7 to stay alive in the series. (Photo: Darryl Smart)
The Brooklin Redmen staved off elimination with a 9-7 win over the Six Nations Chiefs in Game 4 of the MSL semifinals Saturday night behind a 52-save effort from Zach Higgins and four transition goals. Dan Lintner had 2 goals and an assist, Shawn Williams a goal and 3 assists and John Lafontaine a goal and 2 assists for the Redmen. Vaughn Harris led the Chiefs with 2 goals and 4 assists, Cody Jamieson had a hat trick, Jeff Shattler a goal and 3 assists and Colin Doyle 4 assists.

The Redmen led 2-1 after the first period and stretched the lead to 4-1 by the 5-minute mark of the second. To that point, Brooklin had one power play goal, one shorthanded goal, one 4-on-4 goal and one regular strength goal. The Chiefs then went on a 5-goal run in just over five minutes, culminated by Jamieson's natural hat trick in 2:38. Dan Ball stopped the run by ripping home a sub shot in transition 22 seconds after Jamieson's third and Lintner's second tied it up 6-6 heading into the third period.

Lakers take 3-1 series lead over Kodiaks with 9-7 Friday night win

The Peterborough Lakers scored the last two goals to take a 9-7 win and with it a 3-1 lead in their MSL semifinal series with the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks Friday night in Waterloo. Shawn Evans scored what proved to be the game winner just past the midway point of the third period and Scott Evans added an insurance goal with about six minutes to play. The Lakers had to overcome a 5-2 KW lead midway through the second period. They got a couple of goals back with back to back power play markers 27 seconds apart. After KW scored one to regain a two-goal lead, Peterborough finished the period with a flurry, scoring three goals in the final 2:14. KW tied it up just over three minutes into the third, setting the stage for the Evans brothers' heroics.

Lakers assistant coach Bobby Keast was pleased with his team's performance, especially the way they didn't panic when they were behind. “We've kind of prided ourselves on not having that panic button to push whether you're up or you're behind,” he said. Now their goal is to finish off the Kodiaks as soon as possible. Keast says the Lakers should come out focused in Game 5 on Monday in Peterborough. “It's the prize at the end. We've got to close out this series and we want to do that at home. To be honest, we feel like we owe our fans back at home a big W. We haven't played well at home so we want to change that Monday night,” Keast said.

Chiefs take 3-0 lead in semifinals with 10-6 win over Redmen

Tom Montour dives for a scoring chance against Brooklin. Six Nations won the game to take a 3-0 series lead.
(Photo: Tim Prothero)
The Six Nations Chiefs are in thorough control of their MSL semifinal series, taking a commanding 3-0 lead over the Brooklin Redmen with a 10-6 win Thursday night. Kasey Beirnes led the Chiefs with a hat trick while Cody Jamieson, Colin Doyle and Jeff Shattler each had 4 points. Shayne Jackson had a pair of goals and Shawn Williams 3 assists for Brooklin. The Chiefs scored four power play goals and added a shorthanded marker while the Redmen were unsuccessful on their three power play attempts.

Chiefs' defender Billy Dee Smith said it's been nice getting their whole roster back together after an unsettled regular season. “I think the difference right now is we're playing as a team,” said Smith. “If we need to get one our offence is getting a quick one back. We're helping each other out, both the offence and defence preventing the other team from going on runs. Whether they score two our offence answers or the defence shuts the door, or vice versa. We're playing a good team game right now.”

While the situation doesn't look good for the Redmen, Brooklin Head Coach Wayne Colley says he still has faith in his team. “I honestly think that we can come back and win four games,” Colley said. “We've got to win a period at a time and right now we're not winning the periods. Hats off to them.”

Game 4 goes Saturday night in Six Nations in a game that can be seen live via JVI webcast. Click on the Webcast Sports logo in the righthand column of this site to view the game.

Lakers rebound from Tuesday loss to take 2-1 series lead with 10-6 win over Kodiaks

The Peterborough Lakers regained home floor advantage by taking Game 3 in their MSL semifinal series 10-6 over the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks in Waterloo Wednesday night. The Lakers scored a pair of shorthanded goals to help take a 6-2 lead midway through the second period. KW fought back with three straight to end the frame, pulling them within a single goal and they tied it up just over a minute into the third when Jordan Critch connected. But the Lakers answered immediately, getting a goal from Adam Jones just 49 seconds later to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Shawn Evans, Mark Steenhuis and Nick Weiss each scored twice for the Lakers, who take a 2-1 lead in the series. Corey Fowler and Ryan Benesch each had a pair for KW. Game 4 is back at the Waterloo Recreational Complex Friday at 8 pm.

Not so fast, Lakers: Kodiaks turn tables on Peterborough with 13-7 win

The Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks got hammered in game one of their semifinal series with the Peterborough Lakers, falling 14-4. They weren't about to let it happen again, so they came out fast and just kept rolling en route to a 13-7 win in game two Tuesday night. Junior callup Chris Cloutier led the way with 3 goals and 3 assists as the Kodiaks outscored the Lakers in each period. Ryan Benesch had a hat trick and a pair of assists. Joey Cupido, Jamie Rooney and Corey Fowler each added 2 goals for KW, with Rooney and Fowler also garnering 2 assists each.

Mark Steenhuis and Shawn Evans had 2 goals and 2 assists and John Grant Jr. 2 goals and an assist for Peterborough. Dillon Ward was outstanding in the KW net. The Lakers outshot the Kodiaks 54-37 but could only beat him seven times.

The Six Nations Pro-Fit Chiefs struck early and were able to hold off the late surge to earn first blood.
Stephen Keogh's goal with just over five minutes to go in regulation gave the Chiefs a 9-8 win over the Brooklin Redmen on the road Sunday night.
With the win, the Chiefs own a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven Major Series Lacrosse semifinal series.
Cody Jamieson and Colin Doyle scored less than two minutes apart late in the first period to give the Chiefs a two-goal lead after 20 minutes.

Brandon Miller made 43 stops to earn the win, while Mike Poulin made 50 save in teh losing effort.
Game 2 of the series is Tuesday, when the two teams lock horns at the Iroquois LAcrosse Arena at 8 p.m.

LAX NOTES: Jamieson led the Chiefs with three goals and three assists, while Beirnes nad Keogh each had two helpers to go along with their goals. The Chiefs almost had its full roster. Roger Vyse, Craig Point and Randy Staats were notable scratches.

Lakers dump Kodiaks 14-4 to open playoffs

The Peterborough Lakers came to work and showed just how good they can be in a 14-4 win over the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks in the first game of the teams' MSL semifinal series. The first period was close as Dillon Ward made 17 saves in the KW net to keep his team within one at 3-2, but the floodgates opened in the second. The Lakers poured in eight goals on Ward and his replacement Steve Fryer in the middle frame to take an 11-3 lead into the final 20 minutes. Ward returned for the third and was very good again, but the deficit was far too much for the Kodiaks to get back into the game.

Mark Steenhuis, as he has done much of the year, led the Lakers attack with 3 goals and 3 assists. Aaron Wilson and Chad Culp each chipped in 2 goals and 2 assists and Brad Self had 2 goals and a helper. Corey Fowler was the only Kodiak with more than one point; he scored twice and added an assist.

Excelsiors beat Lakers 11-8 in final game of regular season

The Brampton Excelsiors may be out of the Major Series Lacrosse playoffs, but they finished their season strong by downing the Peterborough Lakers 11-8 at Memorial Arena in Brampton Thursday night. The Excelsiors scored seven straight goals to open the second period and three straight off the top of the third, enough to give them the win over a Peterborough team that had already clinched second place. Brady Heseltine led all scorers with 2 goals and 2 assists for Brampton. Shane Scott also had a pair of goals. For Peterborough, Matt Crough and Andrew Suitor scored twice each.

The Lakers led 2-1 after the first period but found themselves trailing 8-2 after Brampton's run. Peterborough got four goals back before the end of the period, including three in 26 seconds from 18:19 to 18:45. The Excels turned the momentum back in their favour, though, with the three-goal run that gave them an 11-6 lead and held on from there.

Peterborough finishes the season at 10-8, tied with Kitchener-Waterloo for second, but gets the higher seeding and home floor advantage in the first round based on a better goals for and against ratio in the two games the Lakers and Kodiaks split during the season. Brampton finishes 5-13 and alone in sixth place.

Playoff positioning taking shape; Wednesday game will determine order of final two spots and semifinal pairings

Brandon Miller and the Six Nations Chiefs assured themselves of a post-season berth when they downed the Rock 8-7
in Oakville Monday night. The Chiefs will now face the KW Kodiaks for third Wednesday. (Photo: Darryl Smart)
The Six Nations Chiefs pulled out an 8-7 win Monday night over the Oakville Rock. As a result, the Chiefs are in the playoffs and the Rock are out of them. With Brooklin having clinched first and Peterborough locked into second, the only thing to be determined is who will finish third and who will take fourth. That will be decided Wednesday night when the Chiefs face the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks. Both teams currently sit at 9-8, so the winner will take third place and face the Lakers in the semifinals. The loser will finish fourth and face the Redmen in the semis. If they happen to tie, KW will earn third place based on a better record between the two teams this season.

Oakville led 3-1 after the first period Monday at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre and were up 5-2 past the midway point of the second. Then the Chiefs went on a four-goal run to take the lead for the first time in the game. Danny Lomas' second goal of the game for Oakville evened things up at 6-6 heading into the final 20 minutes. The Rock kept the momentum going when they got the first goal of the third, from Mike Mawdsley just 53 seconds in. That would prove to be their last goal of the night, though, as Brandon Miller shut the door from there out.

By Darryl Smart

The push to the Major Series Lacrosse playoffs continued for the Six Nations Pro-Fit Chiefs.
In front of a good crowd at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena, the defending Mann Cup champs came away with a 7-6 win over the Oakville Rock.
With the Rock ahead for much of the game, Kasey Beirnes tied things up for the fifth time, seven minutes into the third period, before Cody Jamieson scored his third goal of the game with just over six minutes remaining to give the Chiefs the victory. For photos from the game CLICK HERE
With the win, the Chiefs improve to 8-8 and sit in a two-way tie for third with the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks.
"Every game is like a playoff game now," Chiefs coach Rich Kilgour said before the game. "We thought we'd be battling for top spot at this time of year. Right now we're battling to get in."
Danny Lomas led the Rock in the first period, scoring three times. Colin Doyle and Jamieson responded for the Chiefs.
Jamieson continued to heat up in the second period, while Randy Staats added one, and St. Catharines junior A call-up Eric Fanell netted his first MSL goal.
Patrick Corbett, Rob Hellyer and Brenden Thenhaus scored for the Rock.
Brandon Miller was at times outstanding between the Chiefs pipes, stopping 32 shots, while his Toronto Rock teammate, Nick Rose was tagged with the loss in a 29-save effort.
The Chiefs' playoff push continues Monday, when they go to Oakville, before wrapping things up Wednesday at the ILA, when they host the Kodiaks. Both games are at 8 p.m.

Redmen master late-game heroics in pair of wins

Zack Higgins and the Redmen, here facing Peterborough,
won a pair of games with late goals this week.

The Brooklin Redmen made the most of their late opportunities, scoring goals in the last five seconds to win back-to-back games over the Oakville Rock and Six Nations Chiefs Monday and Wednesday. Against Oakville, the Redmen trailed 3-1 after the first period but rebounded to be tied 6-6 after 40 minutes. They led 8-7 but the Rock tied it up when Rob Hellyer connected with 44 seconds to play in regulation time. Brooklin got the ball with just over 30 seconds to play and called a timeout in which they pulled the goalie and drew up a play to get the ball to Kiel Matisz in the slot. They managed to get it to him and he buried a behind the back shot with just three seconds on the clock for the winner and the 9-8 final. Redmen Head Coach Wayne Colley said his team was a bit lucky to pull out the win but they're pleased to have done so. "It clinches first place overall which is one of the destinations we wanted to achieve along the way. That's only one; we've got a couple more to go," Colley said. "We played hard. In the first period we didn't play very well. Second and third we played not too bad at all so things turned around."

The Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks swept a home and home series with the Brampton Excelsiors Sunday and Tuesday, improving their record to 8-8 and moving into third place while eliminating the Excelsiors from the playoff race. KW won 10-5 on Sunday in Waterloo behind a pair of goals each from Ryan Benesch, Luke Laszkiewicz and Jay Thorimbert. They led 4-1 after the first period, 6-3 after the second then scored the first two goals of the third to pull away.

On Tuesday, things were much closer in Brampton. KW led just 5-4 after two periods and, while they again scored the first two goals of the third, the Excelsiors refused to go away. Brampton fought back to within a goal thanks to four third-period goals from Joe Resetarits, who also had an assist for a 5-point night. Defender and captain Chris Corbeil helped on the offensive end with two goals and an assist. Benesch led the Kodiaks again with three goals and two assists. Jamie Rooney chipped in with two and two as the Kodiaks passed the Six Nations Chiefs for third and moved closer to clinching a playoff spot. Steve Fryer earned both wins in goal for KW.

Kodiaks beat Lakers 11-8, Rock take out Excelsiors 12-5

downed Peterborough 11-8. (Photo: Tim Prothero)
The Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks made a statement Thursday night: that they can play with anybody in Major Series Lacrosse. The Kodiaks went into Peterborough, the home of the Lakers who were rated first in the latest IL Indoor MSL Power Rankings, and won 11-8 to keep their playoff hopes moving forward. The win allowed KW to keep pace with Oakville at 6-8. The Rock downed Brampton 12-5 in Thursday night's other game.

“We've got a good team here. Everyone thinks that we're cellar dwellars and everything else, but we can compete with anybody and be in any game,” said Kodiaks assistant coach Jamie Dubrick. “We had a rough week last week with the two losses against Oakville, two games we should have won, I think. Our guys just didn't show up to play. This is a big game for us, to come up here and beat a team like this that has won a couple of games the last little bit. [Peterborough's] a strong squad, that's a Mann Cup contending team right there. So I think we can compete with anyone. I think this is going to be good for the week coming up. We've got two big games Sunday and Tuesday [against Brampton] and we'll see what happens.”

Peterborough Lakers down Brooklin Redmen 12-9

Scott Evans had a hat trick to lead
Peterborough over Brooklin.
(Photo: Tim Prothero)
In a battle between the top two teams in Major Series Lacrosse Wednesday night, the Peterborough Lakers had to overcome a slow start to take away a 12-9 win over the Brooklin Redmen. Brooklin jumped out to a 5-1 lead, largely because they outworked the Lakers and won pretty much every loose ball battle all over the floor in the first half of the first period. After John Lafontaine scored back to back transition goals for Brooklin, the second at 11:40, Peterborough pulled starter Tyler Carlson and put in Davide DiRuscio. The change seemed to awaken the Lakers, who played much better defence and worked harder in both ends in front of the replacement.

Redmen captain Shawn Williams, who led all scorers with a goal and 5 assists, acknowledged that it wasn't the goalie's fault that Brooklin took an early lead, but making the change made a big difference. “I think once we got Carlson out of the game they woke up and said 'That's on us, that's not on him.' Good teams battle back through that and they did,” Williams said.

Kiel Matisz scored 3 goals and 2 assists for Brooklin. Scott Evans led the Lakers with a hat trick and an assist. Mark Steenhuis had 2 goals for Peterborough, which got 2 or more points from 11 different players. The Lakers turned the momentum around after falling behind thanks to some hard work from Robert Hope, Nick Weiss and Chad Culp, all of whom led the charge. The whole team seemed to respond in the second half of the first period and throughout the rest of the game. Peterborough was particularly strong in the third period, in which they outscored the Redmen 5-1 to pull away for the win.

Rock sweep home-and-home by downing Kodiaks 9-7 in Oakville Monday night

Mike Mawdsley and the Oakville Rock beat KW 9-7, pulling into a tie with the Kodiaks for fourth in MSL.
(Photo: Tim Prothero)
The Oakville Rock stepped to the plate and hit big double, taking a 9-7 win over the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks Monday night to finish off a home-and-home sweep of the Kodiaks on consecutive nights. Rob Hellyer's hat trick and Stephan Leblanc's 4 assists were key components as the Rock's offensive leaders stepped up to help the team pull into a tie with KW for the fourth and final playoff spot in Major Series Lacrosse.

Oakville Head Coach Phil Sanderson was happy with his team's teams efforts all over the floor. “Both ends. Robbie was our leader out there on offence along with Steph. I thought Ethan O'Connor had a hell of a game for us, too. I thought he took control for us in the back end. Brad Gillies has been really good for us too lately. Those guys have been stepping up for us big time.”

Rock score last three goals to edge Kodiaks 7-6 Sunday evening

Nick Rose, here against Peterborough, allowed only six goals
as the Rock edged KW 7-6 Sunday. (Photo: Tim Prothero)
The Oakville Rock scored three goals in the final 4:21 to pull out a 7-6 win over the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks in the first half of a home and home series with huge implications in the Major Series Lacrosse playoff race. Mike Mawdsley and Stephan Leblanc scored to tie the game up then Rob Hellyer connected for the winner in the final minute of play. Leblanc (2g goals, 1 assist) and Hellyer (1g, 2a) were the game's leading scorers. Mike Melnychenko scored his first two goals for the  Kodiaks in his second game with the team after coming over from Brooklin in a deadline trade.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period then KW outscored the Rock 5-3 in the second period to take a 6-4 lead into the third. Nick Rose shut the door on the Kodiaks in the third, allowing his Oakville teammates to pull out the win, which pulls the Rock within a game of KW for fourth place and the final playoff spot. Another Oakville win in tonight's game at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre would move the teams into a tie, while a KW win in the rematch would put them back to two games ahead. If the Rock win and Brampton can beat Peterborough for their third straight win, there would be a three-way tie at 5-8 for the fourth spot.

Excelsiors edge Chiefs 4-3 behind standout performance from Tye Belanger in goal

The Brampton Excelsiors had plenty of new faces in the lineup for their Saturday night game against the Six Nations Chiefs, but they didn't let that stop them from pulling out a 4-3 win thanks to a phenomenal performance by goalie Tye Belanger. He made 53 saves to lead the Excels to their fourth win of the season and a game ahead of the Oakville Rock in the win column for fifth place. Brampton scored three times in the first period, added a goal in the second then held on to earn the victory over a Six Nations team whose lineup was also featuring several different players than usual. Nine Chiefs players are currently taking part in the world field lacrosse championships.

One player who was on the floor for the Chiefs was Colin Doyle, the veteran leader who had missed the entire season so far because of an injury. Doyle was thrilled to be back on the floor. “It felt awesome. I missed it. It's what I love to do,” Doyle said. “Obviously my timing was off. My shooting was poor. But I got involved in the game. It was a good game. I didn't feel like I played great but I got involved and that was all I really expected from tonight. It was disappointing we didn't win but felt great to be out there.”

The Brampton Excelsiors pulled off the upset of the Major Series Lacrosse season, coming back to beat the first-place Brooklin Redmen 14-12 in overtime Thursday night. Brampton put together a 6-3 third period including scoring the last 4 goals of regulation time to force the extra 10-minute period. Their transition game came up big for them in the overtime as Mike Kirk and Chris Corbeil chipped in goals, in addition to Joe Resetarits' second of the game to go with 4 assists. Kevin Ross led the way with 3 goals and 4 assists for the Excelsiors, who move into a tie with Oakville for fifth place with a 3-8 record. Corbeil struck for his second of the game at 8:59. Then, starting at 14:59, Brampton got goals from Mike Burke, Mark White and Ross in less than two minutes. Brooklin downs KW 12-7 behind Poulin's 50 saves

Kiel Matisz, here against Brampton, had a shorty and 4 assists
as Brooklin downed KW 12-7.
The Brooklin Redmen and KW Kodiaks met for the first time since their trade deadline deal that saw Mike Poulin head to the Redmen, and the veteran goalie made 50 saves to lead his new team to a 12-7 win over his old team. Kiel Matisz had a shorthanded goal and 4 assists for Brooklin. Curtis Knight and Kyle Aquin each scored twice for the Redmen, who improve to 11-1 and extend their lead atop the Major Series Lacrosse standings to eight points over second-place Six Nations.

Mitch Wilde scored KW's only goal of the first period as the Redmen took a 5-1 lead into the intermission. The game was closer the rest of the way; Brooklin outscored KW 7-6 in the second and third periods. Mat McLeod scored twice for the Kodiaks. Steve Fryer, who was one of the players going the other way in the Poulin trade, made 42 saves in taking the loss.

Lakers appeal is denied; three games will remain forfeited

The Ontario Lacrosse Association has denied the appeal of the Peterborough Lakers seeking to reinstate the three games they forfeited at the beginning of the season for playing ineligible player Scott Evans. The OLA's ruling was succinct, telling the Lakers "The appeal by the Peterborough Lakers MSL team was denied. The Automatic Fine Policy must be followed. It is the team's responsibility to manage their game suspensions."

With the lost appeal, the Lakers remain at 6-6 in the standings, rather than the 9-3 they would be had the three wins been returned to them on appeal. Brampton, Oakville and Brooklin each received one win for games they had lost to the Lakers.

Oakville Rock double Brampton Excelsiors 12-6

Rob Hellyer, Stephan Leblanc and Shayne Adams all had huge nights to lead the Oakville Rock to a 12-6 win over the Brampton Excelsiors Monday. Hellyer led all scorers with 8 points off 3 goals and 5 assists. Leblanc scored 3 goals and 4 assists and Adams had 2 goals and 5 assists. The key to the game was the second period. Things were all tied up 4-4 after the first 20 minutes, but Oakville outscored the Excels 4-0 in the second to take control of the game. Adams put the exclamation mark on the second-period run, scoring both of his goals just 29 seconds apart late in the frame. Joe Resetarits had 3 goals and 2 assists to lead Brampton, who remain in last place at 2-8 while Oakville moves one game ahead of them at 3-7.

Lakers handle Kodiaks with ease, win 15-7

Tyler Carlson and the Lakers allowed only 7 goals in upending the Kodiaks
on Sunday evening. (Photo: Tim Prothero)
The Peterborough Lakers enjoyed a pair of 5-goal runs as they dominated the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks en route to a 15-7 win in Major Series Lacrosse action Sunday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex. Cory Vitarelli had a hat trick and five other players scored twice each for the Lakers, while Mark Steenhuis led all scorers with a goal and 5 assists for 6 points.

Jay Thorimbert opened the scoring for the Kodiaks six minutes into the game, then the Lakers ran off five straight goals before the period ended. KW battled back into the game, drawing within 6-4. Then the Lakers got rolling again and ran off five more goals in a five-minute span to take thorough control. The outcome was never really in doubt after that.
